Eastern Conference Sad Panda Friday Roundup

A few things from last week that all involve MLS Eastern Conference teams with unhappy fan bases:

DC United lifted some off season gloom by signing Cristian Castillo on loan from Mexican second division side Leon. DC's apparently been after Castillo for a while, and I think there's the potential for him to have moderate success in MLS. There's also the potential for him to be another central American player who can't make the adjustment and sort of flames out. For me the bigger question is whether this is DC United's big off season signing or if there's going to be another. That team needs more help than Castillo can provide - and a coach.

As for Castillo, it looks like he may be in for a few surprises:

What do you know about D.C. United?
I’ve heard it’s one of the best teams, the one with the most championships.

At least the second part is true.

Meanwhile, over at Chicago, Greg Seltzer at No Short Corners thinks Richie Williams has the inside track on the Fire head coaching position, while Chris Costello thinks it's all fucked up and Tom Dunmore just laughs at the aburdity.

Trying to avert his eyes from the carnage, Sam Stejskal gives out Secret Santa gifts to Chicago players out of spite and bitterness, including an interesting one to Brian McBride:

At this point in his career, Brian McBride isn't exactly known for his speed on the field. But once the game ends - and the Toyota Park media starts heading into the Fire's locker room - you can count on one thing every time: McBride will make like Usain Bolt and get the hell out of Bridgeview before you can say "paper towel."

The quickness with which he leaves the locker room is remarkable. It makes me say "wow" every time. In fact, McBride is so quick that he will sometimes leave Toyota Park without even drying his hair after his postgame shower.

And that is why Brian gets the ShamWow. With this part shammy, part towel, McBride could dry his hair on the go. It wouldn't take more than a second for his hair to go from sopping wet to bone dry - meaning Brian could dry off and not sacrifice any time at all.

Lastly, Toronto FC managed to sell out its 2010 season ticket base before the new year. I love this quote:

"As we head into our fourth season, we continue to be amazed at the support of our fans," said senior director of business operations Paul Beirne.

Given the quality of soccer you've forced them to watch the last three years, I'm amazed, too.
