No Sounders FC practice today, but thanks to the Dynamo press crew that really does a nice job, I've learned that Houston's home field is down to upper level end zone and sideline seats.
. . .
Now, we in Seattle would tend to scoff at this, because Sounders FC games are so well-attended and the team even opens up additional seating. But as soccer fans, we all agree, I think, that good crowds are only good for the growth of the sport. So here's hoping that the home of the Dynamo is packed Sunday.
Attendance smack? You're talking attendance smack? Don't they take your beat credentials away from you if you do that?
And then on Hurtado losing out on MLS defender of the year to Chad Marshall:
My take: Wrong choice. The guy is very good, but didn't play all season like Hurtado did and Sounders FC's defense gave up fewer goals. Even Geoff Cameron, the other finalist, would have been a better choice. You have to reward the team with the stingiest defense. And "child please," as Chad Ochocinco would say, it's wrong to vote for a defender based on the number of goals he scored. The award is about defense. Oh well.
Have you even seen Chad Marshall play? Do you know anything at all about this game? This isn't an award for perfect fucking attendance. Neither is it a team award, they have some of those, they're called the US Open Cup, the Supporters Shield, and MLS Cup. And if you'll notice, there's one with our name on it this year. But you don't get shit for leading the league in semi-interesting statistical categories.
Besides, even if this was a team award, Columbus only gave up two fewer goals than we did - playing *without* the 2008-2009 MLS defender of the year for stretches at a time. So I'd say they'd have a pretty good fucking case for the award just like we would.
As for the goals, I can't believe you're actually going to argue that being a threat on set pieces should have no bearing on the defender of the year discussion. And we haven't even talked discipline - both Cameron and Hurtado got as many or more cautions *this year* than Marshall has in his entire career. So, I guess if you want to reward a hack who picks up a card every three games or so, then, yeah, Hurtado's your man.
Let me add all this up to be sure I'm crystal clear on your logic - Hurtado played in 9 more games, got 7 more cautions, scored three fewer goals, had ten fewer shots on goal, and committed twice as many fouls as Marshall, and you think that because we gave up two fewer goals than Columbus did when they played a third of the season without Marshall, that Hurtado should get the award? Are you out of your fucking mind?
Anyway, I've never liked you videotaping my ass in practice, and now I know you're a dick. But seriously, in case you haven't noticed, our backs are up against the fucking wall this weekend, and you're over here talking attendance smack and making up reasons for us to have an entitlement problem like the pricks in DC and Toronto? What is wrong with you.
